Random Update and snippet

Welp.  I go back to work on Monday after three weeks off.  My house is still a disaster, I'm still exhausted, and I didn't get nearly as much writing done as I'd planned.  Oh, Sims 3, you time-sucking black hole, you.

Sigh.

BUT, on the other hand, I've made leaps of progress on my crossbigbang fic, which is a cross-over between Iron Man (movieverse) and Haven (July!!!  Get here already!!!), and from which I have a snippet (rough) to share.  :D  My only concern with it is that I'm having a lot of fun with the pseudo-science geekery but it may be too much and slowing the story to a crawl at that point.  I also need to think of a couple of Troubles for Tony to encounter...

Guh...

Anyway, a snippet for people to hopefully enjoy.  :D  No warnings, but massive spoilers for Haven season 2.

*****

[Nathan and Duke] stopped, partially hidden in the shadows of the trees, and peered into a small clearing.

In the centre of it was a man, face down on the ground, bruised and bloodied, apparently unconscious, and definitely naked.

"Well," Duke said slowly, "there's something you don't see every day."

~~~~~
The first thing Tony noticed was the pain.
Every bone in his body hurt and every inch of his skin felt like it had gone through a cheese grater.
Then he noticed he was cold. Which just seemed to be another type of pain.
Then he heard the argument.
"We can't just leave him here! Look at him!"
"Duke. I know! But time is of the essence if we're to find Audrey before they do something to her!"
"Nathan. Nathan! Look at me. They're not going to do anything to Audrey. And not just because they're afraid of her. Don't you get it? They're not going to do anything to Audrey because they need me to kill her. Me! So until they rescue me from you, Audrey's safe. Okay?"
There was a long silence, then, "That doesn't mean they won't hurt her in other ways."
"I know. I know! But I think we have time. They need me. I don't think they'll start trying to hurt her themselves until they can't find me."
"Which they're supposed to do. Find you, I mean."
"Yes, but only after they think I've injured you out here in the woods. I know the plan, man. I was there, remember?"
"Fine, Duke. Fine! But in case you haven't noticed, the guy is naked! Are you wearing an extra pair of pants, by any chance?"
Naked, Tony thought dimly. Huh. That at least explained why he was so cold. He must have really tied one on last night if he was naked out here...in the...woods?
It was too much effort to think.
He slipped gratefully back into the darkness.
I - am highly amused by this fic, which may (or may not) be a good thing.  :D
Anyway, that's it for now.  I better enjoy my last day and a half of freedom before I'm back at work.  At least I'm on course for the first two days...learning about ethics for public servants...which is actually going to be very interesting, I think....
Hahahahaha!!! I wish I knew! I was originally going to try to write a Haven fic for the hc_bigbang, and Tony Stark just kinda snuck his way in there...
I don't even know...
Quotes
"All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need...fantasies to make life bearable."
REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.
"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little --"
YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.
"So we can believe the big ones?"
YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.
-- Susan and Death in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
"And no practical definition of freedom would be complete without the freedom to take the consequences. Indeed, it is the freedom upon which all the others are based."
-- Lord Vetinari in Going Postal by Terry Pratchett
They thought the Library was a dangerous place because of all the magical books, which was true enough, but what made it really one of the most dangerous places there could ever be was the simple fact that it was a library.
-- Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett
As a wizard, it was something that Ponder had only before encountered in acorns: a tiny soundless voice which said, yes, I am but a small, green, simple object - but I dream about forests.
In the 24th century, there will be no hunger. There will be no greed. And every child will know how to read.
-- Gene Roddenberry, as repeated by Jonathan Frakes in the documentary How William Shatner Changed the World
---------------------
We've got two lives, one we're given and the other one we make
And the world won't stop, and actions speak louder
Listen to your heart, and what your heart might say
Everything we got, we got the hard way.
Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want.
Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, "I'll try again tomorrow."
-- Mary Anne Radmacher, as seen in Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Tales to Inspire
---------------------
I never loved the soldier
Until there was a war.
Or thought about tomorrow
'til my baby hit the floor.
I only talk to God
When somebody's about to die.
I never cherished freedom
Freedom never cries.
-- Five for Fighting, Freedom Never Cries from the album Two Lights
---------------------
It may sound absurd: but don't be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed: but won't you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream
-- Five for Fighting, Superman (It's Not Easy) from the album American Town
---------------------
Had a dream last night took a time travellin' ride
Back to my childhood where those monsters reside
They snack on innocence and dine on self-esteem
But I like to be in touch with what makes me scream
Vampires, mummies and the Holy Ghost
These are the things that terrify me the most.
No alien, psychopath or MTV host
Scares me like vampires,mummies and the Holy Ghost.
-- Jimmy Buffett, Vampires, Mummies and the Holy Ghost from the album Fruitcakes
---------------------
"I want to believe that... the dead are not lost to us. That they speak to us... as part of something greater than us - greater than any alien force. And if you and I are powerless now, I want to believe that if we listen, to what's speaking, it can give us the power to save ourselves."
