New Fandoms to Check Out

These are fandoms I've "discovered" while reading fanfic here on LJ.  I just don't want to forget them, and I want to check them out at some point or another (cause I've enjoyed the fanfic about them so much).  Oh, and suggestions are welcome!

ETA:  Because I have the memory of a goldfish - or maybe Dory in Finding Nemo (look, shiny thing!)...I just remembered two more...d'oh!!

ETA2:  Aaaaand another three.  Seriously - memory pills would be a good investment for me I think.

April 27/09 - Still more.  I need to stop making a list and actually start checking these out.  Maybe once my monster plot bunny has decided to take a nap... LOL

May 8/09 Just one more this time.

May 25/09 - Two more that were recommended to me by some writers in those fandoms.  I really, really need to add some links to this list, so others can check out some of the fic that's making me interested in these fandoms.  Maybe that will be my summer project.

August 28/10 - Added a new one... :):

August 29/10 - aaaand another one... and a third one from the comments because I never added it a year or so ago... *cough*  (Yes, I'm a procrastinator - why do you ask?).

October 15, 2011 - Haven't updated this in sooo long - haven't been keeping track, either...ooops...  :)

  • Angel
  • Firefly
  • Psych
  • Spice and Wolf
  • Red vs Blue  [May 25/09 - I watched the first episode on YouTube a couple weeks ago, and laughed my ass off.  Since then, I've been too cranky/pressed for time to watch anymore, but will DEFINITELY be continuing with this series.]
  • The World Ends With You  [May 8/09 - I googled this one; it's a video game...with battles and things, I think - based on the description.  Which means I will be forced to read a walkthrough or two because I can't do battles and things.  Simulation; strategy games; adventure games (you know, putting puzzles together that kind of thing) , time management - all good.  Anything that needs to be shot or punched - I'm done.  :(  )
  • Tin Man  (Oct. 15/11 - Watched this about a year ago.  Can't say I was overly impressed with the acting - but definitely loved the re-imagining of it.  :) ).
  • Dark Angel
  • Supernatural
  • Naruto
  • Kingdom Hearts
  • Final Fantasy
  • Labyrinth
  • Hellsing
  • Bleach
  • Plunkett and Macleane
  • Detective Conan
  • Fire Emblem 9/10
  • The Slayers
  • Castle
  • Gundam Wing
  • The Moon-Runners
  • Fables
  • Big Bang Theory
  • The Prophecy Series (Movies)
  • Avatar:  The Last Airbender
  • Peacemakers
  • Community  (Oct. 15/11 - Watched it - liked it - am now a semi-regular watcher of it.  I don't necessarily find it laugh-out-loud funny every week, but I do find it absolutely brilliant in ambition and execution.  Season 2's Paradigms of Human Memory was genius - a clip show made up of clips from episodes that, well, don't exist.   I only wish the showrunners and the media hadn't spoiled it because I think it would have been hilarious to watch the fandom's heads explode.  (and yes, I'm cruel and evil, why do you ask??  :D )
  • Primeval
  • The 10th Kingdom
  • Misfits

To be continued......

Red Vs Blue? Really?

Somehow that sounds like disturbing fanfic.
Mar. 28th, 2009 08:27 pm (UTC)
The fandom may be really bad porn for all I know - LOL. I'm not even sure exactly what it is - TV? Comic? Game? Seriously - not a clue. But the fanfic I've read has been really enjoyable (to me, anyway), and (if nothing else) I'm just wondering what the hell is going on in the fandom's universe. :)

Oh, officially it's call machinima. It's a sort of fanvid that is created using video games. Red Vs Blue is a popular web series using the Halo video games that follows two units, the reds and blues, as they fight for command of a box canyon which is one of the maps you can play in Halo.

The plot is insane, it's always going in some crazy direction and the one-liners are fantastic.

Seriously the Rooster Teeth guys are totally my heroes and if I had the opportunity to work with them I would take it in an instant. They are phenomenal.

Oh, officially it's call machinima.

Cool - I've learned a new term - thank you! And the whole premise is just crazily creative!! Now, to check it out...{rubs hands in anticipation}. :)

Have you checked it out yet?

Youtube is usually the easiest way. If you just search 'red vs blue episode x' and replace x with 1 and work your way up! The site has the latest series and some of the PSA's but not much else, I don't think.
Mar. 28th, 2009 08:39 pm (UTC)
Wait a minute! I just saw a comment from you on a RvB fanfic I'm about to comment on! That's too funny...and here I thought you'd never heard of it before either... LOL

I live such a sheltered life! {shakes head, laughing}
Mar. 30th, 2009 01:20 am (UTC)
Well HELL YEAH I commented. IT WAS WEIRD!!

The fandom is HILARIOUS. The Rooster Teeth guys are awesome and soooo my heros. You should actually check out their site: Rooster Teeth

They just released a 'mini-series' for the MMORPG 'City of Heroes' with ED! from BNL! It's fantastic!

I have a whole list of good Angel fics. I will have to pass them along. ALSO, let me know if you'd like Supernatural. I'm happy to send it to you so you can see it. It's freaking amazing. mmmmmmmm . . . Winchesters.

Well HELL YEAH I commented. IT WAS WEIRD!!

And freakin' hilarious. The "Yeah, it's rude, I'm EVIL" just about killed me. Bwahahaha!! Lovely!!

Thanks for the link; I will be checking it out in the next few weeks (four more working days until holidays...I. Can. Do. It...)

Please do send me the list of Angel fics. And Supernatural is the one thing on the list that I have no excuse for not seeing, except my own bad memory. It's on Space every weekend; but by the time I remember to turn on the TV, it's the last five minutes of the show. Grrrr...

Which reminds me that I haven't seen Fringe in...forever...please tell me it's still on!!

ALSO, let me know if you'd like Supernatural. I'm happy to send it to you so you can see it.

I will let you know after my holidays. :) I'm going to check out my friendly neighbourhood Blockbusters (if I can find one...) to see what (if anything) I can find off of this list first. (I have a faith I'm going to get lots done during my two weeks off and not just spend the whole time sleeping... :) ).
Apr. 23rd, 2009 02:05 am (UTC)
Fringe is totally still on and turning more and more in to a new age X-Files every episode! It's fantastic and amazing! And I love it to bits.

Angel Fanfic:

HUGE Collection - - lots and lots of smut here. I love it. You can find just about everything and search for just about everything.

Dark Star Fic - - The parent site to the one up above. Check out Phantasmagoria. They've got an LJ comm that's not *hopping* per say but they do weekly themes based around episodes and it's pretty fantastic. They're very nice there.

Angel Annex - - Not HUGE, but some cute stories.

Sunnydale Stories - - More slash than not I think. There's actually a Bones/Angel crossover, almost at the very bottom, that ends up with Dru, Spike, Angel, and Booth in bed. I'm not gonna lie. The writing is a little crappy but it's got heart. And . . . smut.

Angel Fanfic @ Loony Archivist - - I'm gonna say this is my FAVORITE archive ever for Angel fanfic. It's very clean and easy to navigate and the fic quality is top notch.

Secrets of Angel - - A VERY comprehensive site focused on Angel. Includes a biography and digital image of Angel's tattoo!

Octaves of the Heart - - Totally made of win. This site has my very favorite Angel/Buffy fic ever! It's total AU and totally delicious!

Which leads me to:

I was going to wait on replying until I've had a chance to check out some of your recs, but then I thought "how rude! I should at least acknowledge it and say "thanks"!"

So, THANK YOU for the recs; I will be checking them out. :)

My favorite Angel/Buffy stories!

The Nature of the Beast by Jo. - - Angel lost his soul once too often.

The first chapter is by far it's weakest and that's saying a lot because it managed to hook me into a story that's got hundreds of pages and goes to hell and back, multiple times, all in the name of some twisted fucked up love. *dies of joy* Reminds me of a REALLY good X-Files AU 'Life from the Ashes' for no real reason.

Crave by Rheanna - - Set during first season, between "Parting Gifts" and "Somnambulist". When magic intended to help a drug addict goes wrong, Angel is left increasingly unable to control his craving for blood - and Wesley and Cordelia must face the most difficult decision they'll ever have to make. Rated PG

A fantastic episodic fic. She's got a couple more that are real pretty like as well, but this is my favorite.

The Other Half Lives by Yahtzee - - Set during the first season of "Angel" at some point between "Sanctuary" and "To Shanshu in L.A." Cordy rexamines her feelinsg for Wesley after he is injured by Velga demons; meanwhile, Phantom Dennis is going out of his undead mind. Rated PG

This one is BEYOND cute and adorable. It made me tear up and had Phantom Dennis, who I *heart*

Return by Roseveare - - 'She can't believe they're the last ones left.' Faith and Wesley, ten years on.

I have this really big soft spot for Faith and this fic snuggles right in there and makes itself at home. PLUS, Wesley live! FTW!

Vivere by Rheanna - - What does it mean to be alive? Rated R

Long and delicious. Set post-NFA. Absolutely amazing and wonderful and SOOOO made of win.

On The Other Side of Fate by Tami - - Angel Season 5 / Crossover with Pre-Bones. FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth finds himself immersed in a world he knew nothing about. Vampires, sires, demons and lawyers converge as he tries to figure out how to survive in LA's most notorious law firm.

Slashy Bones/Angel fic. Scroll down to ALMOST the bottom. There's no good linkage to JUST this story. NC-17 LIKE WOAH.

That's all I got for Angel. I need to remember where all my SPN links are. You should totally get in on bones_fic if you haven't already. They've got some good stuff for Bones, obv :)

tin man fanfic? hmmm...
Mar. 29th, 2009 04:45 pm (UTC)
Aarrgh - I'm trying to find a more direct link to the story that started me wondering about the Tin Man universe - but think I can find it??? Noooooo.... (okay, found it!! yay!)

Anyway, the author who started me off on this trail is Erinm-4600, and this story in particular: http://community.livejournal.com/12to32/95405.html .

Totally bonkers, and totally hilarious.

Mar. 30th, 2009 10:15 pm (UTC)
thanks for the info... i admit that i kept hoping during tinman that Cain would sweep DG off her feet (or vice versa)
Mar. 28th, 2009 09:17 pm (UTC)
Hey, you should definitely check Red vs. Blue out. It's just insane fun and craziness. Here's a link to their youtube page if you want to look. http://www.youtube.com/user/roosterteeth
Mar. 29th, 2009 04:30 pm (UTC)
Thanks for this! I will definitely check it out (although it likely won't happen until I'm on holidays - only one more week to go - yay!).

Oh, and I absolutely adore your icon - Calvin & Hobbes = sheer genius. :)
Mar. 29th, 2009 08:50 pm (UTC)
PS - I forgot to say "thank you for coming by my journal." So, thank you! :D
Mar. 29th, 2009 05:19 pm (UTC)
Tin Man is definitely an interesting series. You should check it out if you have the chance.

I don’t know how much you know about the miniseries, but Tin Man is a modernized version of The Wizard of Oz. Basically, the Outer Zone (or “O.Z.”) is a parallel plane to our world where magic is real. “Tin Man” is the nickname for law enforcement.

They do some really clever things with the verse. (The Cowardly Lion is part of a species of empathic telepaths, Toto is a shapshifter and the Scarecrow actually did have his brain removed to protect classified information.)

The main female protagonist (D.G. aka Dorothy) is a little annoying, but I’ve never been a fan of Zoe Deschanel. Alan Cumming made up for it by being wonderfully quirky and Neal McDonough was surprisingly good as Cain (The Tin Man).

I’ve never read any fan fic for the series (I’m not a huge fan fic reader) but I think that the verse has a lot of possibilities.

Thank you!! The more I learn about this fandom, the more anxious I am to actually watch it. I'm thinking of signing up for Canada's version of Netflix with the hope that I can rent most of the items on this list and putting Tin Man at the top.

I've only seen Zoey Deschanel in The Happening, and that movie was so disappointing and full of "WTF - why aren't you people dead?" moments that I have no idea if I like her or not. So, I'm willing to keep an open mind.

Thanks for the info and the recommendation. :) (And for coming to my journal :) ).

Mar. 30th, 2009 05:45 pm (UTC)
I'd say that it's worth a watch especially if you're a fan of darker and more modern fantasy and/or fairytales. Another good series in that vein was The 10th Kingdom.

I only went to see The Happening because it was filmed in my High School. (That's my great claim to fame.) It was horrid. Let's never speak of this again.
Apr. 2nd, 2009 02:49 am (UTC)
Another good series in that vein was The 10th Kingdom.

This actually sounds vaguely familiar...or I could be hallucinating again...Thanks for the rec, though - I'll add it to the list the next time I edit it. :)

Let's never speak of this again.

LOL - you've got a deal!!
Mar. 30th, 2009 10:18 pm (UTC)
she was annoying wasn't she ? i really liked Neal McDonough as Cain... maybe because everything he said sounded like it should have been from a film noir
Mar. 31st, 2009 05:52 am (UTC)
I'm not sure that D.G. had a setting between whine and deadpan emotionless. I think this is because Deschanel doesn't believe in moving anything but her eyes.

Neal McDonough is even more impressive once you've seen him in another role, like the one he currently has on Desperate Housewives. I happened to catch a scene he was in and spent about a minute saying, "Is that... is that the guy from Tin Man?"
Mar. 30th, 2009 04:08 am (UTC)
Yeah, so I sort of poked into your journal from the fanfic50 community and had to reply to this because a bunch of these I know.

Firefly is fantastic. At least, I loved it. It was only fourteen episodes long, but the various characters in all of their differences and struggles--I really, really loved it. If you do end up watching Firefly and you like it, there was a full length feature film made to sort of close off the gaps left hanging by the show's cancellation. The movie is called Serenity. I've known one person who couldn't get into it, but most people have loved it. I've watched it so many times that I probably still have most of it memorized. I think I really loved that it was about this group of broken people who somehow defied the odds and worked and lived with each other anyway.

Angel I saw little bits and pieces of, and it was done by Joss Whedon (who also did Buffy the Vampire Slayer and coincidentally also did Firefly). It was all right, and I know what happened to the characters at the end, but it's not one I wanted to watch in its entirety.

Tin Man was a really good movie. I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I really liked how they pulled a lot of concepts from The Wizard of Oz, but put a completely unique spin on them.

Dark Angel was only two seasons long, and I never finished watching the second season (I just got busy) but I really did enjoy the first season and what I saw of the second season. It was an interesting show.

Naruto--honestly, I tried to watch Naruto twice. I got to maybe the eighth episode both times, and I realize that it's probably a lot better as it gets going. The first episodes were just trying to establish a lot of story. I still kind of want to see what happens if I can get past that eighth episode, but it's daunting because there are SO many episodes. I mean, there are something like 200 episodes in Naruto, and then the story is continued in Naruto Shippuden (I think I may have misspelled that). But anyway, the second one already has a ton of episodes in it and it's still going.
Mar. 31st, 2009 07:15 pm (UTC)
Yeah, so I sort of poked into your journal from the fanfic50 community

Cool, thanks and welcome. :) Everybody's welcome here (well, so long as they're polite of course ;) ).

Firefly is fantastic.

I hear that from everybody, so I'm definitely looking forward to watching it (and the movie as well). I didn't realize it was only 14 episodes (and I thought it was bad when Jericho was cancelled after 1 and 1/3 seasons...but that's a whole other rant).

Thanks for the info regarding some of the listed fandoms. It provides more context for me until I can track things down for myself. It's greatly appreciated! :)

Okay, and NOW I'm fapping like a moron.

YAY Dark Angel! Max/Alec was one of my VERY first ships EVER.

I've got one FANTASTIC rec for it: Val Jean's Fanfic

Check out The Best Laid Plans - - Three complete novels and a series of stand-alone stories that chronicle Max and Alec's love as it developed after the DARK ANGEL series finale episode "Freak Nation."

Also check out Better Late Than Never - - A novel by Valjean continuing the saga of Max and Alec's relationship following the events in Max Allan Collins' offical DARK ANGEL books SKIN GAME and AFTER THE DARK. If you haven't read AFTER THE DARK, click here for a few spoiler details that will allow you to enjoy the story better.

Oooooh! If you haven't found the Blue Sun for Firefly yet, GO GO GO!!!!

Okay, I'm done with random recs now.

finding the stories
I am trying to find if there is any way to retrieving Valjean's stories 'The Best Laid Plans & Better Late Than Never'. I tried contacting the writer through fanfiction messages but haven't gotten anything. Any ideas? Big Fan of Dark Angel. :)
May. 24th, 2013 02:42 pm (UTC)
Re: finding the stories
I'm sorry, I don't know. I know there's something called the wayback machine that lets you retrieve old sites/content but I've never used it. Also, have you checked Archive of Our Own (www.archiveofourown.org) - maybe they posted there under a different screen name??

Sorry - not much help. :(
Apr. 27th, 2009 12:44 am (UTC)
{hangs head in shame} Noooo...not yet...I don't know where the time goes during the day (well, to work, yes, but outside of that!!).

I will, I will - I promise!!!
