Mission 101-2009 Update - Part Three

Mission 101 Updates Part One

Mission 101 Updates Part Two

January 2010 Update  February 2010 Update  March 2010 Update  April 2010 Update

End Date:  September 29, 2011

1. Cut credit card debt by 10%
January 16/10 - Currently 1.34% LESS in debt than when I started this challenge.  Progress is amazing!!  LOL  April 3/10 - Whoohoo!  1.58% LESS in debt!!  LOL  Of course, I still haven't bought my furnace, hot water heater and now I need a new washer.  So.  Yeah.  Not so much progress made as hoped...

2. Read all the books in my house I haven’t read yet – and want to read (38/911 or 4.18%) (38/912 or 4.17%)   (48/918 or 5.23%)  (51/919 - 5.55%) (58/924 - 6.28%) (61/924 - 6.60%) (65/925 - 7.03%) (66/925 - 7.14%)  (82/931 - 8.81%)
January 16/10 - Cleaning house is a marvelous thing.  Came across a small pile of books that I had forgotten about.  But holidays are also wonderful - reading steadily so made some progress on this goal.  :)  I'm currently on a short story binge, so hopefully this number will go higher faster since I've already read most of my short story collections - I just need to finish them off.  February 28/10 - So...I read 13 books in January and NONE in February???  I find that hard to believe...but, this is the only number I have right now.  *sigh*  April 24/10 - This number is probably quite a bit higher as I've been churning through bodice rippers like...well, like ripping bodices.  LOL  I've been binging a bit, I guess, but I've been having a good time.

3. Finish tiling the floor in the office
February 28/10 - I've been feeling the urge to tackle this one again...which is really rather scary...mainly because it usually ends with swearing and things being thrown around.  But I'm feeling the urge BECAUSE...

4. Finish tiling the floor in the hallway
February 28/10 - ...BECAUSE I'm really, really, REALLY sick of my hallway looking like shit.  At least it's not a long hallway...and if I'm going to do the hallway (which connects to the office and the bedrooms) I may as well finish off the little bit in the office and my bedroom that's left.  The spare room is another story (since I used different tiles in there...and I don't particularly want to redo everything in there...although I probably will....)

5. Finish tiling the floor in the bathroom

6. Finish tiling the floor in the kitchen
7. Finish tiling the floor in the dining room

8. Finish tiling the floor in the attic

9. Finish yard clean up

10. Sell house
January 16/10 - I keep waffling on this one.  On the one hand, I'm so sick of this house I could just scream.  On the other - the thought of going through the hassle of selling then finding an apartment that will take pets, moving, perhaps renting storage space, blah blah blah just doesn't fill me with lightness and joy either.  On the third hand, I love moving - finding a new place, settling in - there's just something about it.  From a realistic standpoint, though, I don't think this is likely to happen until 2011.  This year, I need to buy a furnace and rebuild the fence; next year I need to have my handyman come in and do the floors, I think.  THEN it will finally be ready to be put on the market.  With any luck, the recession will have (heh) receded and I'll get a good price for the house.  If I lose my job, of course, then all bets are off and I'll be selling the house for whatever I can get.  LOL   April 3/10 - I keep waffling on this one.  I'm not sure why...I really dislike the location (buses are horrible);  I'm so bored with it I could scream...but everytime I decide "yes, I'm going to sell!" I think of an excuse to put it off...a lot of it is because I'm lazy and the amount of cleaning I have to do...blech.  :(

11. Go to Europe the year I turn 45 (2011)
January 16/10 - Yeah - probably not going to happen.  Maybe Arizona and/or San Diego instead...

12. Go to Manitoba to visit friends.

13. Go to BC to visit relatives.

14. Go home in June/09.

15. Go home for Christmas/09. (FAIL)

16. Write a newsletter to my siblings once a month.

17. Successfully complete NaNoWriMo 2009

18. Successfully complete NaNoWriMo 2010

19. Attend a writer’s retreat

20. Participate in a creative writing class

21. Attend one Jerichon
February 28/10 - I don't Jerichon is still going on...which is too bad.  So, this is really more "Attend one event for Jericho fans".  :D

22. Get a second kitty

23. Have a new job.
February 28/10 - Well, rumours are there will be massive changes announced on Tuesday (March 2nd).  To give some context:  I work for the Alberta government.  They announced 700 jobs were to be cut in the public service when the budget came down on February 9th.  One ministry which was hit extremely hard in the budget has been escorting people from the buildings with a rumoured 400 jobs to be cut in that Ministry alone.  Can you say "not a fun place to be"??  Anyway, it's not my ministry BUT, of course, uncertainty is rampant and people in my ministry are very, VERY worried - of course, we're not the only ones.  *sigh*  It's the 90s all over again...     March 8/10 - 57 layoffs announced on the 1st.  I wasn't one of them but we'll see what the future holds.

24. Complete the MDP program (5/19)  (8/19)  (10/19)
February 14, 2010 - Finished three days last week, and I have two days this week and two days on March 1/2 - and then I'll only have 7 days to go.  :D  February 28/10 - Well, I won't be going to the last two days of this course.  I didn't find it particularly useful and we have an urgent we're dealing with that I've been working on for a week and which we HAVE to have done before the end of the week.  Plus, my partner-in-crime needs some minor surgery so he'll be gone as of the 2nd, which means I'm holding down the fort alone.   *sighs*  Thankfully, we're pretty slow right now (although given the climate, that's not necessarily a good thing.  ;D ).  So, if I still have a job I'll keep plugging away at this.  If not, well - this will be a fail through no fault of my own!!  LOL

25. Go to 45 movies by July 31, 2009 - (9/45) FAIL. :(

26. Complete an inventory of all my books (1012 (1,244)
March 8/10 - Finished another bookshelf on Sunday.  Now all that's left is my bookshelf of reference books, my textbooks from University and the stragglers around the house (those books I've read but not yet put away).   Making damn good progress!!!  \o/

27. Complete an inventory of all my music  (220)  (380)
March 19, 2010 - ...and counting...  :)  April 3/10 - Finished!!!  YAY!!!   I'm sure I have stragglers around the house - but those won't amount to much (unlike my book inventory - *cough* - so, I'm officially counting this as DONE!!!!  YAAAYY!!

28. Complete an inventory of all my DVDs/VHS tapes (54)   (91)
April 3/10 - FINISHED!!!  Whoohoo!!!  :)  Again, probably a few stragglers, but those won't amount to much.  Now, I do have a whole whack of VHS tapes that I taped stuff off TV - I do need to finish that inventory - but I hadn't originally included those in this goal.  Soooo, as far as I'm concerned, this one is DONE!!!!

29. Buy the complete Babylon 5 series DVDs (1/5)

30. Buy the complete Get Smart series DVDs (2/5)

31. Complete my X-Files series DVDs (4/9)

32. Complete my West Wing Series DVDs (2/7)

33. Complete an inventory of all my games  (131)  (146)
January 16/10 - ...and still counting.    April 3/10 - FINISHED!!!  It's been a very productive weekend so far... LOL.  Usual disclaimer about stragglers (and of course I have soooo many I've downloaded so I don't actually have CDs...but that's a count for another day, because when I set this goal, I hadn't really considered the ones I'd downloaded...maybe that will be for the Mission 101 I start in 2011.  :D

34. Complete my collection of Isaac Asimov books (written by him; fiction only) (38/224)

35. Celebrate with my sister when she turns 50 in 2010

43. Go for a physical every year (2009 (Fail), 2010, 2011) (0/3)

44. Find a doctor

45. Make a will

46. Make a living will

47. Clean house once a week
January 2, 2010 - Well, I've been in a bit of a cleaning frenzy during my holidays.  Or...you know, as much of a cleaning frenzy as I ever get into.  *cough*  Still lots (LOTS) to do, but I have fifteen days left to do it all in.  :)  February 28/10 - Oh, Lord.  I really don't know why I have such a mental block when it comes to cleaning house.  I think it's because I have no social life - so who the hell cares???  But then I'm horribly embarrassed when I DO have somebody drop over unexpectedly because it's just disgusting.  Seriously.  I'm not kidding.  I've seen some previews of that show "Hoarders" - which I won't watch because I detest reality TV with a passion unsurpassed - and while I'm not quite THAT bad, I definitely have the potential...  O.O  So, yeah.  I've GOT to get off my lazy ass and make an effort!!!   March 8/10 - OMG - I cleaned out my livingroom on the weekend and actually used it!!!  Okay, everything is piled into my spare room but at least now I can take each box to the livingroom and go through it and MAKE DECISIONS!!  Next step, though, is to clean out the upstairs (which is pretty minimal) because that's where I"m going to store everything.  I'll probably FINALLY get everything settled (after ten years *cough*) and then I'll sell the house.  That's usually the way it works...  :(

48. Do laundry once a week
March 8/10 - I.  Need.  A.  New.  Washer.  Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!!!  :(

49. Make at least one new off-line friend in 2009   (FAIL)

50. Make at least one new off-line friend in 2010

51. Make at least one new off-line friend in 2011

52. Think at least once about dating. Seriously consider thinking about it, anyway.

53. Actually get stuff out of my house.
January 2/10 - Well, in my cleaning frenzy, I've moved a bunch of stuff out to the garage for when I hire garbage guys in the spring/summer.  But there's still lots (LOTS) to go.  This is what happens when you're a bit of a hoarder and you don't move (on average) once a year like I used to do.  Things just...accumulate...  ;D

54. Keep the spare room clean and ready for guests
March 19/10 - BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!  All of the boxes and bags and other things I need to go through are piled in the spare room right now.  I can't get to my closets and I can only get to a couple of drawers of my cupboards.  Not exactly ready for guests...

55. Find a way to make some extra money every month.
January 16/10 - I think I may look for a second job - just something for a few hours a week that will give me some extra money to put on my [expletive deleted] credit cards.  I'm soooo tired of being broke!!  February 28/10 - *...sigh...*  March 19/10 - *sigh squared*  But I've been spending like a drunken sailor...too bad that's not a goal...  :(

56. Phone each of my siblings once a month.
March 19/10 - Yeah, not too sure if this one will ever get into gear...I have 7 brothers and sisters, some of whom work nights or extremely long hours, so knowing when to phone (especially when I have nothing to say, really) is tricky.  I think the newsletter may be the better way to go...

72. Do all the tourist things in Edmonton at least once

73. Only go to the casino when my sisters are in town (or I'm in their towns)
January 16/10 - So far so good for January.  Of course, I've been home for all of it so far...  :D  February 14/10 - My brother's girlfriend's daughter is turning 18 today and she wants to go to a casino for her birthday.  Sooo, that's what we're doing tonight.  Hopefully I'll be lucky!!  Otherwise, I haven't set foot in a casino all year.  :)   February 28/10 - Yes, we went out to the casino and I walked out $6.50 richer than when I went in.  LOL  Haven't been in a casino since, though.  And that's the way it should stay.  I need to find out if people are planning on heading this way this year.  I'm thinking about going home in July for a family friend's 90th birthday and, of course, we have Vegas in October.  :)  March 8/10 - Went to the Casino on March 1st.  Dropped too much money.  Oh, well - we start again.  *sigh*  April 24/10 - This...has been a bad, bad, BAD month.  :(  *sigh*  Starting again...

74. Read all of the Discworld novels again. In order. Again.
April 24/10 - This doesn't really count for this goal, but I finally read The Last Hero.  Unfortunately, it's a library book so I have to return it - but - oh, Terry Pratchett, how I love thee!!!

76. Rewatch all the Cary Grant movies at least once (2/72)

Quotes

"All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need...fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little --"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

-- Susan and Death in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

"And no practical definition of freedom would be complete without the freedom to take the consequences. Indeed, it is the freedom upon which all the others are based."

-- Lord Vetinari in Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

They thought the Library was a dangerous place because of all the magical books, which was true enough, but what made it really one of the most dangerous places there could ever be was the simple fact that it was a library.

-- Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

As a wizard, it was something that Ponder had only before encountered in acorns: a tiny soundless voice which said, yes, I am but a small, green, simple object - but I dream about forests.

-- Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

In the 24th century, there will be no hunger. There will be no greed. And every child will know how to read.

-- Gene Roddenberry, as repeated by Jonathan Frakes in the documentary How William Shatner Changed the World

---------------------

We've got two lives, one we're given and the other one we make
And the world won't stop, and actions speak louder
Listen to your heart, and what your heart might say
Everything we got, we got the hard way.

-- Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Hard Way from the album Come On, Come On

---------------------

Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want.

-- John Mayer, Waiting on the World to Change from the album Continuum

---------------------

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, "I'll try again tomorrow."

-- Mary Anne Radmacher, as seen in Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Tales to Inspire

---------------------

I never loved the soldier
Until there was a war.
Or thought about tomorrow
'til my baby hit the floor.
I only talk to God
When somebody's about to die.
I never cherished freedom
Freedom never cries.

-- Five for Fighting, Freedom Never Cries from the album Two Lights

---------------------

It may sound absurd: but don't be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed: but won't you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream

-- Five for Fighting, Superman (It's Not Easy) from the album American Town

---------------------

Had a dream last night took a time travellin' ride
Back to my childhood where those monsters reside
They snack on innocence and dine on self-esteem
But I like to be in touch with what makes me scream
Vampires, mummies and the Holy Ghost
These are the things that terrify me the most.
No alien, psychopath or MTV host
Scares me like vampires, mummies and the Holy Ghost.

-- Jimmy Buffett, Vampires, Mummies and the Holy Ghost from the album Fruitcakes

---------------------

"I want to believe that... the dead are not lost to us. That they speak to us... as part of something greater than us - greater than any alien force. And if you and I are powerless now, I want to believe that if we listen, to what's speaking, it can give us the power to save ourselves."

-- Fox Mulder, The X-Files from the episode The Truth, pt. 2
