Mission 101-2010

Mission 101-2010
January 1, 2010 - September 28, 2012

March 2010 Update  April 2010 Update  May 2010 Update  June 2010 Update   July 2010 Update

    1.  Cut credit card debt by 10%.
March 15/10 - Oy.  Going backwards fast on this one.  :(  I'm almost 2:% MORE in debt than when this year startedJune 19/10 - Yeah - sooo not going to talk about this.

    2.  Read all my unread books.  (14/873 - 1.60%)  (30/879 - 3.41%)  (41/898 - 4.57%)
    June 20/10  - Knew I'd read a few more!!  :D

    3. Finish my Agatha Christie collection.

    4. Finish my Christopher Stasheff collection.

    5. Update my Stephen King collection.

    6. Go home for Christmas 2011.

    7. Read 25% of the books on my "To Read" List Here.  Listed as of December 31, 2009.  (1/68)  (3/68)  (5/68)  (6/68)
March 15/10 - Read Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith.  Wow.  Grim, uncompromising, heartbreaking, disturbing, uncomfortable - and very, very compelling reading.  Not necessarily a pleasant read, but I couldn't put it down.  Okay, I skipped a part in the first half simply because I sorta kinda thought I knew what was coming and I just couldn't bear to read it at the time.  I'll be reading this again before I put it on my bookcase.  In spite of all the things listed above, it was still a very fast read.  Just so horrendously heartbreaking - more because of the conditions in Russia that he describes and how people lived  and what happened to them.   March 31/10 -   Updated my list here.   April 24/10 -  Updated the list again here..

    8. Check out all the shows/games/etc. listed here:  shirleyann66.livejournal.com/12642.html .  Listed as of December 31, 2009.

    9. Participate in at least 25% of the communities I belong to as of December 31/09.  This means making a claim/posting stories and/or commenting on posts (depending on the community).

    10. Move everything upstairs downstairs and move everything I need to store upstairs.  If I'm not going to live in that space I may as well use it. as storage.

    11. Get all the movies I taped off TV on DVD.

    12. Read all postings made to at least 25% of the communities I belong to as of December 31/09 (that means from the beginning of the community to "now").

    13. Post comments to postings to the communities in #12 that I really enjoyed.  Who cares if the feedback is years late??

    14. Write an average of 1000 words per day for the 1001 days.  This doesn't mean I have to write 1000 words every day, but that at the end of the 1001 days, I've written 1,001,000 words.  (26,221/1,001,000)  (51,163/1,001,000  -  5.11%)  (81,505/1,001,000 - 8.14%)
March 15/10 - I'm editing slo-o-o-wly, which is why this number is so pitifully low at the moment.  Plus I've had an incredibly intensive three weeks at work - not getting home until close to 8:00 p.m. every night, if not later.  So, yeah.  Not as productive as I would have liked.  :(  June 19/10 - Gah.  I really need my little laptop with me when I'm updating these things because that's where all my stuff is tracked.  I've made progress on this - just don't have it with me at the moment.

    15. Get the bathroom redone (if I haven't sold my house before then).

    16. Go through each credit card and get RID of those programs that I can't remember agreeing to enroll in.  I'm sure I did - but now I don't know what the hell they're for and I just need to get rid of them.

    18. Cancel the credit card when it gets paid off.

    20.  Watch/re-watch all my DVDs and VHS tapes.

    21.  Play or re-play all my games to the end (if there is one).

    22.  After playing a game, decide if I will every re-play it.  If not, get rid of it.  (1/??)
March 8/10 - Tried playing Capitalism II - hated it.  So, that's one game that's going out the door.  Also, won't know how many games I have to play until I finish my inventory.  :)

    23.  Eat at restaurants from A to Z.  (I got this from somebody visiting places from A to Z and thought it was a really cool idea.)

June 19/10 - You know, I had such high hopes for this one...of course, I've done nothing but live off of frozen dinners and canned/dried foods....which was the habit I was trying to break with this resolution.  Grrr...well, the 1001 days aren't over yet!!

    29.  Spend no money at all for five working days a month.  January 10, 11, 12; February 10, 11, 12; March 10, 11, 12; April 10, 11, 12; May 10, 11, 12; June 10, 11, 12; July 10, 11, 12; August 10, 11, 12; September 10, 11, 12; October 10, 11; November 10, 11; December 10, 11  (1/33)

Hey, with regards to #46, I have an invite to An Archive of Our Own (also often know as AO3), if you'd like it.

AO3 is a little like fanfiction.net, in that it's a panfandom archive, except you can upload stories of any rating. It's also much easier to upload stories to AO3 than fanfiction.net and AO3 doesn't regularly decide certain formatting tricks - such as separating sections with asterisks - are suddenly unnecceptable. However, it is a new archive that is still being developed, so they are fairly frequently tweaking how it works (usually to add good new stuff!) and there's isn't the same critical mass of users or quite the same commenting culture yet as at fanfiction.net.

It's also "owned by fans for fans" so the organisation that runs it has a commitment to never carrying advertising and to defending takedown notices and other legal challenges to fanfiction.

scribblesinink and I archive all our Jericho stories over there, so you're very welcome to join us. If you're interested, let me know, and I'll get the invite code emailed to you. (Umm, I think I have your email address, but best PM me with it if you do want the AO3 invite.)

Hi!! *waves*

Thanks for this - I've been on AO3 reading stories (mostly Iron Man when I was searching desperately for Pepper/Tony fics). I'd been meaning to research it a bit more - so thanks for providing the info for me. :)

I'll send you a PM with my e-mail address so if you cn please send me the invite, that would be awesome! I may not have much chance to do much with it for the next little while, but I'd like to at least get started.

(and it's been sooo long since I've been on Fanfiction.net, it's criminal!! :( )

Quotes

"All right," said Susan. "I'm not stupid. You're saying humans need...fantasies to make life bearable."

REALLY? AS IF IT WAS SOME KIND OF PINK PILL? NO. HUMANS NEED FANTASY TO BE HUMAN. TO BE THE PLACE WHERE THE FALLING ANGEL MEETS THE RISING APE.

"Tooth fairies? Hogfathers? Little --"

YES. AS PRACTICE. YOU HAVE TO START OUT LEARNING TO BELIEVE THE LITTLE LIES.

"So we can believe the big ones?"

YES. JUSTICE. MERCY. DUTY. THAT SORT OF THING.

-- Susan and Death in Hogfather by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

"And no practical definition of freedom would be complete without the freedom to take the consequences. Indeed, it is the freedom upon which all the others are based."

-- Lord Vetinari in Going Postal by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

They thought the Library was a dangerous place because of all the magical books, which was true enough, but what made it really one of the most dangerous places there could ever be was the simple fact that it was a library.

-- Guards! Guards! by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

As a wizard, it was something that Ponder had only before encountered in acorns: a tiny soundless voice which said, yes, I am but a small, green, simple object - but I dream about forests.

-- Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett

---------------------

In the 24th century, there will be no hunger. There will be no greed. And every child will know how to read.

-- Gene Roddenberry, as repeated by Jonathan Frakes in the documentary How William Shatner Changed the World

---------------------

We've got two lives, one we're given and the other one we make
And the world won't stop, and actions speak louder
Listen to your heart, and what your heart might say
Everything we got, we got the hard way.

-- Mary Chapin Carpenter, The Hard Way from the album Come On, Come On

---------------------

Cause when they own the information, oh
They can bend it all they want.

-- John Mayer, Waiting on the World to Change from the album Continuum

---------------------

Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the little voice at the end of the day that says, "I'll try again tomorrow."

-- Mary Anne Radmacher, as seen in Uncle John's Bathroom Reader Tales to Inspire

---------------------

I never loved the soldier
Until there was a war.
Or thought about tomorrow
'til my baby hit the floor.
I only talk to God
When somebody's about to die.
I never cherished freedom
Freedom never cries.

-- Five for Fighting, Freedom Never Cries from the album Two Lights

---------------------

It may sound absurd: but don't be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed: but won't you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream

-- Five for Fighting, Superman (It's Not Easy) from the album American Town

---------------------

Had a dream last night took a time travellin' ride
Back to my childhood where those monsters reside
They snack on innocence and dine on self-esteem
But I like to be in touch with what makes me scream
Vampires, mummies and the Holy Ghost
These are the things that terrify me the most.
No alien, psychopath or MTV host
Scares me like vampires, mummies and the Holy Ghost.

-- Jimmy Buffett, Vampires, Mummies and the Holy Ghost from the album Fruitcakes

---------------------

"I want to believe that... the dead are not lost to us. That they speak to us... as part of something greater than us - greater than any alien force. And if you and I are powerless now, I want to believe that if we listen, to what's speaking, it can give us the power to save ourselves."

-- Fox Mulder, The X-Files from the episode The Truth, pt. 2
